Jen “Odd” Glantz here!

I’ve been doing a lot of summer cleaning lately. I opened up a tote bag that was stuffed in the back of my closet and saw a huge stack of receipts. I seriously must have saved every single receipt from 2020 until today for everything I bought.

I held the pile of receipts in my hand and walked toward the trash. Right before I dropped them in and said goodbye forever, I asked myself a very important question:

Are these worth anything?

The answer was: YES.

Scroll to find out some funky ways I found for us to make money off old receipts. Woohoo!

  1. Cashback Apps: Some mobile apps and websites offer cashback for scanning and uploading your receipts. These apps typically have a list of eligible products or stores, and you can earn cash or rewards for purchases made at those locations. Examples of cashback apps include Ibotta, Rakuten, and Receipt Hog.

  2. Receipt Survey Platforms: Certain survey platforms pay you for submitting receipts as part of market research studies. They may ask for specific information about your purchase, such as the products bought or the store visited. Popular survey platforms that accept receipts include Swagbucks and ReceiptPal.

  3. Receipts for Tax Deductions: If you have receipts for qualifying expenses, such as business expenses, medical expenses, or charitable donations, you may be able to claim them as tax deductions. Consult with a tax professional or use tax software to determine if your receipts can help reduce your taxable income.

  4. Return or Exchange Items: If you have a receipt for a recently purchased item that you no longer need or want, check the return or exchange policy of the store where you made the purchase. Some retailers allow returns or exchanges within a specified time frame, and you may be able to get your money back or receive store credit.

*I just did this and while I was out of the return window to get money back I did get a gift card instead.

  5. Sell Gift Cards or Coupons: If your receipt includes gift cards or coupons that you don't plan to use, you can sell them online through platforms like Raise or Gift Card Granny. These platforms allow you to list your unused gift cards or coupons at a discounted price, and interested buyers can purchase them from you.
