It’s ice cream week and today we’re exploring odd ways to sell ice cream.
Not all ice cream is sold in a store or in the frozen food aisle of supermarkets.
Some ice cream is sold…well..you’ll just have to read on and see.
Ps. Hit the subscribe button because tomorrow we dive into ice cream business plans and how much cash you can make by selling the sweet treat - you might be shocked (I totally was)!
Sell Ice Cream on Instagram
There have been some really rad and odd food accounts on Instagram that have sold out a certain product - that usually has a bit of a twist (My Cookie Dealer + Allie’s Banana Bread).
I was super impressed by 1-900-ice-cream, an Instagram account known for their outrageous looking cones, with tons of mix-ins and toppings.
They promote this a lot on Instagram with a method called “weekly drops”.
Here’s the business works - take note - because they SELL OUT LIKE crazy!
On Monday we come up with three to six new flavors for the week.
Monday through Friday we make the ice cream in our factory in Kensington.
On Friday night we send out an email through the Flavor Drop Email list notifying customers of the drop. This email contains all the information needed to purchase the ice cream. You will place your order Friday night and pick-up is the following day (Saturday) at our retail location, located at 1405 Frankford Ave. Ice cream pre-ordered on Friday can only be picked up on the date listed in the Flavor Drop email.
On Sunday night we do a drop for nationwide shipping. Orders purchased on Sunday night will be shipped the following day (Monday)
Start Your own Ice Cream Cart Bizz
If you have an odd idea for ice cream and want to go into bizz without too much overhead of having a storefront location, consider your own ice cream car business (more on this tomorrow).
You can get a cart that you either roll around or attach to a bike and be the go-to person for local events, weddings, and even main streets in your neighborhood.
Give the cart (and ice cream) a really weird brand and chances are you’ll sell more ice cream than you ever imagined.
Make Ice Cream a Subscription Service
Every single holiday season, I research new subscription services to gift family and friends. I love those things because it becomes the gift that keeps on giving. I’ve given my mother-in-law a subscription wine service, a subscription book club, and probably 5 other ones.
How about doing a subscription ice cream service, where every month you pick the four flavors you want sent, and the business drops those in the mail to you?
It’s not a new idea. Companies have done this. But they seem to do it in a pretty standard way.
You can customize it, make it odd, and make it something people are eager to sign-up for.
Pair Celebs With Ice Cream
My favorite spot in LA, when I first moved there 10-years ago, was a spot called “Million Milkshakes”. It no longer exists. They used to theme their milkshakes based on celebs who went there and created their own concoction. They even had videos playing on TV screens of those celebs stumbling in and making their own shake.
It’s what made the place so incredible and unique.
How about doing that now with ice creams?
Every celeb has a perfume line, skincare line, or other random product they sell for cash.
Find a celeb, or influencer, and work with them on starting an ice cream brand.
The hard part is, of course, finding the celeb. But if you have the business plan, the big idea, and the track record to show you’re credible, you might just get a YES!! if you slide into a celeb’s DMs.
